MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines has been hit by a second A(H1N1) case and officials warned that while the victim has apparently recovered, Filipinos should not let their guard down because the swine flu virus could mutate into a “more virulent” form.
The second swine flu case is a 50-year-old Filipino woman from Chicago, who flew into the Philippines on May 20. The first case was a 10-year-old girl who had traveled to the United States but was now almost also fully recovered.
Returning Sunday from the World Health Organization (WHO) assembly in Geneva, Health Secretary Francisco Duque called for vigilance and warned against complacency because the swine flu virus remained unpredictable.
“We have past experiences with the 1918 pandemic, the 1957 as well as the 1968 pandemics,” Duque said.
“You would see that in the initial phase, there could be some parallels in terms of how the virus can possibly evolve to become more virulent at some point in time.”
But Duque added that this was “of course, pure conjecture.”
The 1918 influenza pandemic, according to the US Centers for Disease Control website, killed 50 million worldwide.

THE Supreme Court (SC) ordered that the parricide case against Ruben Ecleo Jr. be raffled off again, more than a year since the last development on the case.

The SC First Division directed Cebu City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Executive Judge Meinrado Paredes to conduct the re-raffling and notify the Office of the Court Administrator of the result.
A copy of the two-page resolution signed by First Division Clerk of Court Enriqueta Esguerra Vidal was faxed to Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
